Pachamama Story the Other Side

**** Update Oct 4 2020 *** The video of the event ends the debate. No idols present. Watch the video of the event. (Link Here) Go to 13:20 and listen when the woman gives the statue to Francis and says Our Lady of the Amazon. The Statue was Mary no idol worship. The latter Vatican remark about it not being Mary has been misquoted. The women leader’s latter statement can be reconciled to the faith. (See the full article here) *****

The rest of the article is the old argument, which is still valid yet not as strong as hearing the woman who lead the tree planting event call the statue Our Lady of the Amazon — Mary!! Just as Francis opens Laudato Si by using the term Our Lady of the Amazon. *******

So basically here is the other side of the story. (And no Pope Francis is not an idolater) St. John Paul II used the term Pachamama to refer to mother earth. It is then easy to show how others including Pope Benedict XVI and St. Francis also referred to Mother earth in talks and prayers without anyone causing scandal.

(First I recommend this article that shows that the particular style of statue used in the Vatican was a Marian not demon one. Linked Here)

Fore Pope John Paul speaking of Mother earth using the specifically Pachamama wording see the following link. (Spanish)

You can use google translate to get the just of it.

St. Francis Assisi and the use Mother earth in his famous prayer.

Praised be You, my Lord, through our Sister Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, and who produces various fruit with colored flowers and herbs.

Pope Benedict uses the Mother Earth term “2. To describe the divine action within the maternal womb, the Psalmist has recourse to classical biblical images, comparing the productive cavity of the mother to the “depths of the earth”, that is, the constant vitality of great mother earth (cf. v. 15). : cf.

So basically when Francis said “Good afternoon, I would like to say a word about the pachamama (mother earth) statues that were removed from the Church at Traspontina, which were there without idolatrous intentions and were thrown into the Tiber.”

-Thus Francis knew they were meant to be mother earth not idols. So people should not be afraid of this. The crazy thing is the above quote is actually used to attack francs because he calls the statue Pachamama yet they miss the context of the above quotes and the without idolatrous intention part

If we attack Francis we should also question John Paul II on kissing the ground when he left a plane. (is kissing the ground – mother earth – not also worship of sorts. No, because he was praising God for the ground)

So basically, we are allowed to worship and praise God by being thankful for Mother Earth just as St. Francis was. To call Francis an idolater you first have to prove that both him and John Paul did not understand that the Pachamama was meaning anything other than simply Mother Earth.

Think even of scripture in the wisdom literature. It talks of this female creative spirit often considered wisdom or Mary. In this way it is easy to show just how well Mary can seen to be a mother earth – in fact mother earth is only a type of Mary – thus, should we fear if others represent Mary as mother earth.
